Dear YSM Readers,
I hope that you all have been enjoying these summer months. I write to you as the Archivist of the Yale Scientific Magazine with an update on the progress of our digitization efforts. When I began this project nearly two years ago, I set out with the goal to digitize the entirety of our physical holdings of the magazine and create the most comprehensive archive possible of the Yale Scientific Magazine. It is with immense pride that I report to you all today that that feat has been accomplished. To date, we have uploaded to our website on Eli Scholar 538 issues of the Yale Scientific Magazine. You can read more about this project, and the history of our magazine here.
As I have put at the bottom of previous newsletters, the digitization of the Yale Scientific Magazine would not be possible without the help of our supporters. This project is the culmination of efforts between the Yale Science and Engineering Association (YSEA); Yale Printing and Publishing Services (YPPS), who led the digitization operation; the Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscripts Library; the Yale Library System; and Benjamin Franklin College. Special thanks to Milton Young and Joseph Cerro of YSEA; Patricia Smith and her team at YPPS; Lindsay Barnett, Bethany Seeger, Michael Lotstein, Jeanne Lowry, and Melissa Grafe from the Yale Library System; Benjamin Gaunt at Eli Scholar; and Head Jordan Peccia and Maria Bouffard of Benjamin Franklin College. I would also like to thank members of the Yale Scientific Magazine Nikolai Stephens-Zumbaum, Edis Mesic, and Wyatt Aiken for their help with the uploading process.
Now we look to the future. With an immense portion of the magazine digitized, the large portion of my work will be focused on combing through these issues and exploring the rich works of scientific journalism that generations of scholars have published. Coming to your inbox will be a more consistent series of newsletters, curated reading lists of articles illustrating explicit themes that emerge from the long and storied history of our magazine. These, I do hope you will find interesting and, perhaps, even educational.
To all of you, thank you for your support of the Yale Scientific Magazine. It is in large part because of you, and for you, that our magazine persists.
Sincerely,
Matthew Blair
