The American Dream is enchantingly simple: come to the land of opportunity, where hard work and ambition could change your life forever. For immigrant scientists, that promise has been no different: come change the world by contributing your talents to our world-class labs.

But for many scientists, the American dream is no longer the fruitful promise it once was. Since the Cold War, the United States has relied on global talent to fuel its scientific dominance. When domestic education couldn’t produce enough researchers to meet demand, programs like the H-1B visa—often dubbed the “genius visa”—stepped in to attract top minds from abroad. For decades, this system worked. A 2022 report by the National Foundation of American Policy revealed that the founders of fifty-five percent of US billion-dollar startup companies (startups valued at one billion dollars or more) were immigrants.

Innovators are rethinking whether the US is still the best place to build their futures. Under the Trump administration, immigration restrictions, attacks on academic freedom, and major funding cuts have completely reshaped the scientific landscape.

“A lot of my mentors have been telling me to get out, right now,” said a student quoted in The Chronicle of Higher Education. When the administration shut down the US Agency for International Development (USAID), she lost both her stipend and her research support overnight. This constant uncertainty has accelerated what many are calling an American “brain drain.”

In a recent Nature poll, three-quarters of 1,200 surveyed scientists even said they were considering leaving the country. There has already been a rise in US scientists applying for jobs abroad; a poll from the Nature Careers global science jobs platform reveals that US scientists submitted thirty-two percent more applications for jobs abroad between January and March 2025 than during the same period in 2024. Once a destination for the world’s best scientists, the US now risks becoming a potential liability.

At the Yale School of Medicine, Assistant Professor of Genetics Trevor Sorrells has seen the effects firsthand. “Uncertainty has increased quite a bit since I started my lab three years ago. That has affected certain areas of research intensively already,” he noted. Though his lab has not suffered from loss of funding, many of his postdoctoral students’ future prospects have shifted. For instance, the calculus of where to build a career for his post-docs now involves not just science, but politics and stability. As other countries use this opportunity to expand their research funding to draw talented students from the US, many students are choosing to return home.

Indeed, China is seizing the moment. President Xi Jinping’s “New Quality Productive Forces” framework invests heavily in technological innovation, and Chinese provinces are offering generous relocation packages to attract scientists. European countries, too, have streamlined immigration and funding systems to attract displaced researchers. If the US wants to remain a scientific leader, experts from the Federation of American Scientists argue it must modernize its infrastructure, reinvest in federal research funding, and overhaul STEM immigration policy to keep talent flowing in.

“I hope that American politicians and the general public continue to support life-saving and ground-breaking research as they have for the last sixty years,” Sorrells said. “That model of government investment has led to incredible economic growth and technological progress.”

For decades, the American dream has drawn the world’s brightest minds to its laboratories. But if America fails to protect the people who believed in that dream, it may soon find its brightest lights burning somewhere else.
